LG GC900-Music

The music player on the LG Viewty Smart is pretty good. Similar to the Arena, the music player does not have a separate Now Playing screen and the tracks start playing in the playlist itself. Just press the play button next to the track title and the name will expand and display the track info and you’ll see the playback controls pop-up below on the screen.

There are a couple of annoyances related to the interface though. Firstly, the player never shows the track title but instead shows the file name unless you click on the name. Now, at times all the files in a particular album have the album name as part of the file name and then the track title following it. And since the phone cannot display the entire name at once, all you see when you enter a particular album are the same names with just different numbers. Then you have to go clicking on all of them to find the track that you want.

Also, when you enter Artist view and click on any particular artist, the player does not show the albums of that particular artist but instead all the songs of that artist in a list. Another problem, as mentioned previously in the Interface section, is its inability to remember your position in the list when you go back one level. It will take you at the top of the list, making you scroll down again.

The player comes with a truckload of equalizer presets but not a manual equalizer. There is also Dolby Mobile sound preset but frankly I found none of them interesting, the least of which was the Dolby Mobile.

Then again you wouldn’t need any of them. As it so happens, the default audio quality of the phone is excellent and hence I never found the need to use any of the presets as they couldn’t in any way make it better than it already was. The supplied earphones were strictly average and as usual I’d suggest you use a better pair of earphones, which is made a bit difficult due to the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack on the phone.

The loudspeaker quality wasn’t particularly great but was sufficiently loud. The front location of the speaker did make sure that it would not get muffled when you place it on any surface.

The Viewty Smart also has an FM radio. The radio interface was very nice and there was a large jog dial, which when rotated, went through the frequency band just like the analogue wheel on old radios. The FM reception, however, wasn’t great and I’ve seen better on Nokia phones.
