The LG Viewty Smart is priced at Rs. 27,500. Considering the performance on offer, I’d say straightway that the phone is not worth the price it is asking for. Sure it has got some good things such as the beautiful design, the display quality when indoors and the audio quality and there are also quite a few features available. But there are many areas where the phone falls short of expectations, especially in the camera department. As such I’d suggest readers to go for the Samsung Ultra Touch instead if you want an 8 MP phone with a touchscreen…

The LG Viewty Smart has a 1000 mAh Li-Ion battery. With standard usage, which included a bit of calling, messaging, music playback, camera usage (with some shots taken with flash ON) and web browsing using EDGE the phone lasted for a day and half. This figure is expected to go further down south when you use features such as 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi. As such the battery life of the phone can only be called average.

The LG Viewty Smart comes with a pretty standard web browser built-in. The browser is disappointing in its features as well as performance. The page loading was slow, many elements on the page did not load correctly and the worse thing was that after opening a couple of heavy pages the phone runs out of system memory and then you have to close the browser down. Scrolling around the page was quite slow and the default font was ridiculously tiny, making it hard to read or click on something without zooming in. Overall the browser was pretty unimpressive in terms…

The images and videos appear in a grid view in portrait mode and horizontal sliding view in landscape mode. You can zoom into images by pinching gestures like on the iPhone. The phone also supports slideshows with various transition effects. The phone can open high resolution images fairly quickly and even zooming or panning is smooth and fast.

The music player on the LG Viewty Smart is pretty good. Similar to the Arena, the music player does not have a separate Now Playing screen and the tracks start playing in the playlist itself. Just press the play button next to the track title and the name will expand and display the track info and you’ll see the playback controls pop-up below on the screen.

Camera

The LG Viewty Smart has an 8 Megapixel CMOS camera. It uses auto-focus mechanism and Schneider-Kreuznach optics. The flash has been downgraded from the previous xenon flash on the Viewty to just a single LED in the Viewty Smart. There is however no lens cover, just as before, which leaves the lens terribly exposed to fingerprints and scratches. The weird zoom mechanism surrounding the lens of the previous Viewty has now been moved to the volume keys.

The LG Viewty Smart is a Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 handset. It also supports 3G and HSDPA 900/2100 bands. The phone has a front camera for video calling. It also supports GPRS/EDGE, Bluetoooth v2.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, A-GPS and USB connectivity.

The call quality and network reception on the phone were good and gave no problems. Other connectivity features also worked fine. However, the Wi-Fi strangely could not be used to stream videos and you would have to use the slower (and expensive) GPRS/EDGE or 3G to for that. Also Wi-Fi could not connect automatically to the previously connected…

The LG Viewty Smart has a 3.0″, 480 x 800 pixel display capable of displaying 16M colors. The display resolution is excellent and considering the size the image looks very crisp and sharp. The image quality too is excellent indoors with good colors and contrast. However, all hell breaks loose when you take the phone outside, as the visibility drops down to zero under the sun. Now this is something that we also noted on previous LG phones and I hope LG gets its act together and improves in this area, as it makes the phone pretty much useless outdoors.…

Design & Construction

Apart from the fact that both the Viewty and the Viewty Smart have large touchscreens hogging all the space on the front, both the phones have nothing else in common as far as the design is concerned. Where the original Viewty had an all black, stealth bomber kind of design, the Viewty Smart takes on a more stylish approach with glossy chrome and a champagne gold rear cover with a brushed metal finish.

The LG Viewty was one of the best camera phones of its times. It had some pretty impressive features such as a large touchscreen, a full Flash interface, a 5 Megapixel camera and video recording in DivX format, that too at 120 FPS for slow motion. The new Viewty Smart has got several improvements over its predecessor. Firstly the camera resolution has been bumped from 5 to 8 Megapixel, the screen is now capacitive and it runs the new S-Class interface. Will it be as good as its predecessor or will it be better? Read on to find out.
