Verizon Wireless seems to be on battle turf with rivals lining up against it one after the other. After AT&T, Verizon is up in arms against Sprint over a marketing claim that seems to be stretching it too far. Sprint’s claim that it is ‘the most dependable 3G network in the whole of America’ has left Verizon irked big time.

The Samsung Intrepid is a full QWERTY phone with a 2.5-inch, 320×240 touchscreen, packing ho-hum features like a 3.2MP camera and Wi-Fi. It’ll cost $150 with a 2-year contract on Sprint, which seems pretty pricey considering the Palm Pre retails for the same, but could be a decent businessphone if your business happens to be attached to WinMo. Sprint announced that it will begin selling its first Android handset on Oct. 11, making it the second U.S. carrier to roll out a phone based on Google’s platform.

Up until now, T-Mobile USA had been the only carrier in the U.S. to sell an Android phone. Many theorize that the Android platform won’t start see a dramatic uptake in usage without multiple handsets and carriers using the platform. A wave of announcements are nearing, especially with Motorola  set to unveil its Android strategy next week in San Francisco.

The TouchPro 2 runs Windows Mobile 6.1 and features a 3.6-inch WVGA touch display, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and HTC’s TouchFLO 3D user interface. Other features include Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, quad-band GSM/EDGE radios, 3.2 megapixel camera and microSD card support.

The TouchPro 2 will cost $350 after $100 mail-in rebate with new agreement.

Verizon Wireless has completed initial testing of its 4G wireless service — offering speeds five to 10 times faster than existing networks — and said it will start the commercial roll out in 2010.

Using a new technology called Long Term Evolution (LTE), Verizon successfully made calls in Boston and Seattle — the first two cities to offer the service.

The calls used the new 700 MHz spectrum, recently freed up for cellular use after being assigned to TV stations.

The Overland Park, Kan.-based carrier said it plans to introduce Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode, or AM-OLED, in its high-end phones for better video viewing.
